LOG-006 is the site turning a little bit into a game itself — an XP and rank system for the forums, and the page that grew out of it.
The ask
Forum posts were earning nothing. No sense of history, no reason to stick around past the one question you came to ask. The fix borrowed the oldest trick in the book — karma, basically — with five ranks: guest, user, operator, sudoer, and root, climbed by actually posting.
Locking color behind something real
The site already let anyone pick an accent color. Silver and gold got added as two more — but gated behind having two-factor authentication turned on, not behind rank. That’s deliberate: rank rewards participation, but silver and gold reward an account actually being secured, which is a different thing worth rewarding differently. Wanting the color is a real, if small, incentive to turn 2FA on that a settings-page checkbox never was.
One page instead of two
The rank page ended up more interesting to look at than the stock WordPress profile screen next to it, which made having both feel wrong — two places to manage what’s obviously one identity. Account settings moved into the rank page directly: profile picture on the left, the XP readout as a real graphic to its right, then terminal color and light/dark theme as the third column. Name, contact, and two-factor options sit underneath, with email changes going through their own confirmation step — sent to the old address as the “did you mean to do this” check, not the new one, which is the direction that actually catches an account takeover.
Why this is LOG-006
Nothing here shipped a feature the forums technically needed. It’s the difference between a forum where posting is a thing you do and one where posting is a thing that counts.
